Menendez Convicted in Corruption Trial

Historic Verdict in Federal Case

In a landmark ruling, a federal jury has convicted Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) on all 16 counts of corruption charges. The verdict marks the first time a U.S. senator has been found guilty of acting as a foreign agent and the first indictment in the Senate's 235-year history.

The charges stem from Menendez's alleged dealings with Salomon Melgen, a wealthy Florida ophthalmologist and close friend. Prosecutors accused Menendez of using his influence as a senator to benefit Melgen's business interests, including intervening in a Medicare dispute involving Melgen's practice.

Menendez has denied the charges and plans to appeal the verdict. The conviction could have significant political consequences, as it raises questions about Menendez's ability to continue serving in the Senate.
