Royal Caribbean Reaches Settlement with Family of Toddler Who Fell to Her Death

Grandfather Was Holding Chloe Wiegand When She Fell from Open Window

Case Raises Questions About Cruise Ship Safety and Parental Responsibility

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has reached a settlement with the family of a toddler who fell to her death from an open window on one of the company's ships in 2019. The 18-month-old girl, Chloe Wiegand, was being held by her grandfather when she fell from the 11th floor of the Freedom of the Seas ship while it was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The grandfather, Salvatore Anello, had briefly lifted Chloe up to the window so she could bang on the glass. The window was open about four inches, and Chloe fell out. She landed on the concrete deck below and died from her injuries.

The family filed a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean, alleging that the company was negligent in not having a safer window design and in not providing adequate warnings about the dangers of open windows.

The terms of the settlement are confidential, but it is believed to be one of the largest settlements ever reached in a cruise ship wrongful death case.

The case has raised questions about cruise ship safety and parental responsibility. Some experts say that cruise ships need to do more to prevent children from falling from open windows. Others say that parents need to be more careful about supervising their children around open windows.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean said that it is "deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Chloe Wiegand" and that the company is "committed to the safety of our guests." The company said that it has made a number of safety improvements since Chloe's death, including installing new window locks and warning signs.

The Wiegand family's attorney, Michael Winkleman, said that the settlement is "a bittersweet moment." He said that the family is glad to have the case resolved, but that they will never forget Chloe.
